Carnival revellers have revered the Rio Carnival has the Holy Grail for all things legally sinful. Goa Carnival is not far behind. Introduced by Goa’s Portuguese rulers in the 19th century, the carnival is held every February. Starting just before Lent, on 13 February, this three-day ‘psychedelic festival’ lasts all night. Throw in dance, music, handicrafts, and freshly brewed feni and you have an extended New Year’s celebration. King Momo, the officially appointed festival ruler, gets the party started in Panaji with a Mardi Gras-inspired procession through the streets. One of the eagerly awaited events of the year, the carnival is the time to indulge in feasting, drinking and multicultural celebrations. The carnival starts with a magnificent display of colourful floats, accompanied by a prize distribution ceremony for the best one. The festivities end with the popular red-and-black dance held by the Club National in Panaji.
