He returned to India in August 2022, and, in the short period since then, has anointed himself a saviour of the Sikh community and become the most visible proponent of the demand for Khalistan. With the regional and mainstream media giving him ample coverage, it is imperative to ask who exactly is Amritpal and what does his rise say about the politics in Punjab?

Tur has written an in-depth profile of the 30-year-old self-styled preacher in the March edition of The Caravan, where she traces his sudden rise. Bal has covered the politics of Punjab in great detail and has written a longform report on Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, whom Amritpal sees himself as a successor to, in the May 2014 edition.
