S Jaishankar, India’s external affairs minister, has helped consolidate Narendra Modi’s hold over the operations of the external affairs ministry and is rebranding Indian foreign policy in Hindu nationalist terms.
In this episode of The Caravan Baatcheet, host Vishnu Sharma speaks with Sushant Singh, The Caravan’s consulting editor, and Eram Agha, a reporting fellow at The Caravan, about Jaishankar’s impact on India’s foreign policy. Agha has profiled Jaishankar in the March cover story of The Caravan, “Modi’s Messenger,” where she analyses how the BJP outsider has become the voice of India’s Hindu nationalist foreign policy. Singh has written extensively about foreign policy and international affairs for The Caravan.
Both Agha and Singh argue that Jaishankar has been acting less like India’s foreign minister and more like the ruling BJP’s spokesperson. They believe that this has diminished the position of the foreign minister as Jaishankar focuses more on managing the perception of the government than handling India’s foreign policy. As constitutional values are being ignored in foreign policy, Singh warns about what this could mean for India.

सुशांत और इरम दोनों का कहना है कि जयशंकर भारत सरकार के विदेश मंत्री कम और मोदी के प्रवक्ता अधिक लगते हैं. दोनों ने बताया कि जयशंकर के दौर में यह पद संकुचित हुआ है क्योंकि वह सरकार का परसैप्शन मैनेजिंग पर अधिक ध्यान दे रहे हैं.
सुशांत का मानना है कि विदेश नीति में संवैधानिक मूल्यों को नरजअंदाज किया जा रहा जो एक गलत परिपाटी है.
