In this episode of #CaravanBaatcheet, the editor of The Caravan, and president of the Editors Guild of India and the Association of Indian Magazines, Anant Nath, discusses the five media-related bills and laws enacted by the Narendra Modi government since 2021.
Nath states that cumulatively these laws equip the state with dangerous tools and provisions to control and clamp down on critical voices and free speech. He explains that through these laws, the government aims to create a comprehensive surveillance framework to control the media, censor content, and target dissenting voices.
Nath also argues that the government has continued the tradition of taking forceful action against dissent by creating new laws and validating them with hidden provisions. He describes it as a formula that our lawmakers have deeply internalised.

कारवां बातचीत के इस एपिसोड में कारवां के संपादक, एडिटर्स गिल्ड ऑफ इंडिया और एसोसिएशन ऑफ इंडियन मैगजीन के प्रेसिडेंट अनंत नाथ से सरकार द्वारा पिछले दिनों पारित और प्रस्तावित पांच मीडिया कानूनों और नियमों पर बातचीत.
अनंत का कहना है कि ये कानून, "राज्य को विरोधी स्वरों और अभिव्यक्ति की आजादी को नियंत्रण और उन पर अंकुश लगाने के लिए खतरनाक उपकरणों और प्रावधानों से लैस करते हैं." वह बता रहे हैं कि, "इन कानूनों के जरिए एक ऑरवेलियन ढांचा तैयार होगा जो मीडिया को नियंत्रित करने, सामग्री को सेंसर करने और जरूरी आवाजों को निशाना बनाने की शक्तियां सरकार को देगा."
अनंत यह भी कहते हैं कि नए कानून बना कर और कानूनों में अंतर्निहित कई प्रावधानों से वैधता ले कर असहमति के खिलाफ बलपूर्वक कार्रवाई करने की पुरानी परंपरा को इस सरकार ने आगे बढ़ाया है. यह एक ऐसा फॉर्मुला है जिसे हमारे कानून निर्माताओं ने गहराई से आत्मसत कर लिया है. नतीजा यह है कि हम एक बारहमासी भंवर में फंस गए हैं जिसमें सरकार द्वारा आगे बढ़ाया गया हर कदम हमें और कुचलने लगता है.
