In this episode, host Vishnu Sharma talks to our contributing writer Jatinder Kaur Tur, about an investigation she conducted into the torture of 26 civilians and the murder of three Gujjar men—Safeer Ahmed, Shabeer Hussain and Shaukat Ali—by the Indian Army, in J&K's Poonch district, in December 2023. Multiple officers have since testified in front of a court of inquiry and the armed forces tribunal that two generals oversaw the torture in Poonch, and got away scot-free. More than a year on, the families of the victims have gotten compensation but the police case filed against the torture has not moved. Tur had looked into the cases in early 2024, but her story for The Caravan was taken down by an order from the ministry of information and broadcasting. Re-investigating the cases a year on, Tur collected documentary evidence and the WhatsApp chats of the officers to conclusively show that Operation Pangai, which led to the death of three innocents, was a pre-planned operation, monitored closely by two generals. The Indian Army, the defence ministry and the Jammu and Kashmir Police did not respond to a detailed questionnaire about the findings of this investigation.
Watch now to understand Tur's shocking, exclusive findings.
